"The B-Roll"
Some miscellaneous live action films, sound tests, and stopmotion skits I wrote and directed.
[Warning: Language, Violence, Gore, & College Radio]
BSR: “Excetera Radio Hour”
Morrison and Floyd shoot the shit during intermission and talk about romance. Who doesn't like the smell of paint?
BSR: Brown Student and Community Radio
Back in college, we had to make films every gosh darn week. When you’re a poor art student with limited resources, you take advantage of the things around you. Luckily, I worked at Brown University’s college radio and had some pretty cool dudes who were willing to humor my scripts. Here’s some of the ridiculous videos I used to shoot.
BSR: “Gregor, The Alien”
Gregor, an extraterrestrial author talks about his new book and his life assimilating into human society.
Is this an allegory about the Asian-American experience? Was it inspired by some of my experience living/interning in New York with some mildly passive aggressive coworkers who never hung out with Asian people? …maybe…
BSR: “The Big Sweat”
Running into a serious problem at the station, Radio DJ Ian must solve a sound issue before he falls to chaos and dies from dehydration.
We had less than 6 hours to write and shoot this short. Honestly, we just wanted to play around and shoot in the radio station and use Nayon’s funny baby hands. It’s not that deep. Shot on 16mm film.
“Out of the Black”
Re-sound designed Royal Blood's music video, "Out of the Black" to push my ProTools knowledge. Visually, I own nothing. This is purely fan made.
I highly recommend checking out the real music video - the music is great.
“Trash Talk”
Two girls disguised in garbage cans are stalking the cute boy from school, Jason, with binoculars. They survey his neighborhood from afar, waiting for him to come home. It's already been several hours and their conversation takes a strange turn.
Honestly, I procrastinated and had to shoot this whole short in one day. I saw these cute tiny Tabasco bottles and thought of the entire script on the spot. Thank you to my beloved wife, Codi, for humoring my ridiculous writing.
“Jazz Trance and Shrooms”
In tribute to one of my favorite British shows, "The Mighty Boosh," I decided to lip sync a couple of mushrooms. Since shooting, they have now melted...rest in peace, my dudes.
“It Came From Down Below”
With the Earth depleted of oil, two BP astronauts are sent to space on an epic quest. Little do they know the immense danger they're in when they accidentally drill through a planet's crust.
I wasn't supposed to use stopmotion during my second year in college but I'm hard of hearing...and environmental. The genesis of this film stemmed from the cute Yo Gabba Gabba doll I found in a thrift store. I was compelled to stuff an aluminum skeleton in it and bring it to life. This was my first real film in college and even though I have tons of notes, I still think fondly of it.
